this here is a lil' blog/news area where i might unleash some of my brain activities...

some people have recently asked me for my opinion on what are some of the best acts in Austin. well, here are a few people i go to hear when i have a free night...

1. DUSTIN WELCH & THE HOUSE BAND:::sweet-ass, Appalachian-influenced, whiskey-driven, punk-folk-roots-rock. he's about to release his debut album (and i'm on it!).
2. KACY CROWLEY:::lovely lil' crooner with powerful sultry vocals and a knack for clever lyrics and catchy chord progressions. she's about to release a new album in April, which is gonna be amazing!
3. DAVeeD GARZA or CRY BEAR:::maybe my new favorite (though he's not by any means "new" to Austin or performing)-if you want to see a bad-ass performer, go see this guy. his vocals are quivery-delightful and his rhythmic phrasing borders on hip-hop and tribal chanting. his loud stuff rocks (and his band is amazingly fabulous & quirky) but his quiet stuff won't leave your mind or heart for days and days and nights...he plays Tuesdays at Continental and his other outfit/moniker Cry Bear plays Mondays upstairs at Continental Gallery.
4. DAN DYER:::soulful love-funk. think David Gray meets Prince meets Ray Lamontagne. his new album is beautifully sexy. (and i'm on it!)
5.
MINGTONES:::sweet lil' jazz trio that plays every Monday night at Mings Cafe on the drag (next to the 7-11)-you get to eat the best Chinese in town while listening to 3 of the best players in Austin- Eldridge Goins on drums, Brad Houser on bass & bari sax, and Laura Scarborough on piano and vocals. they groove through Monk and much more with some really fun Disney-turned-spooky/funky tunes.
6. INFINITE PARTIALS:::my friend Grant Hudson has been writing and performing for years. this is his lovely band, lead by him on vocals and guitar, his lovely wife Amy Downing-Hudson (a fabulous actress) on backing vocals, and 3 Andrews (no joke) on viola, violin and cello. add percussion by Jesse Jones and you have a folk revival remeniscent of Simon & Garfunkel, but with a touch of Peter Gabriel or Cat Stevens thrown in for good measure. ; ) they are about to release their first full-length release produced by the incredible Stephen Orsak, who produced my own 2006 release Shudders & Rings.
7. IZZY COX:::talk about a freak show! and i mean that in the most complimentary of ways. this lady's vocals will blow you away-somewhere between a screech and a howl. her band features some of the best players in Austin. this is haunting, 1920s-ish, heart-broken music, including murder ballads and blues, ramblin' songs and foot-stompin' beats. go see her!

a wonderful woman has died. a mother, lover, dancer, prayer, singer...a beaming ray of light who i knew for a mere year. but she existed my whole life and will continue to. Glenda Hunter Mastin, you will be missed.

december 1st, 2006

okay, so yeah, November-what a month. shows shows shows and oh yeah, my album. the CD release party at the Cactus was a magical night-thank you to all who showed your lovely faces & lended us your ears for the evening. i couldn't be happier with my sweet-ass band: Jeremy Bruch (drums), John Thomasson (bass) and Stephen Orsak (guitar, glockenpiel, synth). they made me sound better for sure. so you may notice i don't have many shows for the month of December. maybe cause i was too busy playing shows in November to be booking new ones! so i am somewhat relieved for the break-i need to write me some new songs and work my day jobs to make some more money so i can keep doing this here music thing. but no worries-i'll be hoppin' once again in the new year. a tour is in the works for Spring 2007-hopefully reaching a lot of places i have never played. most likely the SE & NE. as for now, things are good, i'm enjoying the cold weather and trying to stay healthy.

if you are reading this, i am grateful for your attention to my art. it is what makes me thrive and it is a pleasure to share it with others. to put it simply, i heart music. and speaking of, i saw an amazing documentary today at the Alamo Drafthouse downtown called Before the Music Dies. you may have been lucky enough to have seen it premier at SXSW this past year or maybe stumbled upon the live show at Austin Music Hall that accompanied it. (if you missed that one, well, i'm sorry-it featured Erykah Badu, Wendy & Lisa (of Prince), Ephraim Owens, Questlove, Doyle Bramhall and DJ Jazzy Jeff among others=for only $16). okay any way, the film discusses the sad, but true topic of the state of the music industry; how so much crap is permeating the radio stations today due to corporate station buy-out; how labels (for the most part) don't develop artists anymore-they basically produce platinum overnight sensations who have less talent than my floorboards, while the real musicians get overlooked. ok yeah, so just click on the link above to find out where you might be able to view the film live or buy the DVD. i usually don't rant on about things, but this film really spoke to my heart.as a musician. it is frustrating the way things are, but there are some positive things going on too-such as the revolution of independent artists and labels that are reaching hundreds of people without having to play ball with the bad boys. it'll all be okay. i just wish America could see beyond the Benjamins sometimes. don't you? as Questlove (drummer of The Roots) states in the film, commerce and art are two seperate things. when people finally realize that and act accordingly either as an artist or business person, things make a bit more sense.

peace & love y'all...
SuZ.

::july 9th, 2006::

having just returned from cool Colorado...

the album is completely finished, just waiting on the layout & design aspect of it to be done. expect it to be out and ready for your dollars and ears in late August/early September. for now you can satisfy your need for songs at my Myspace, where you can listen to four of the forthcoming tracks. if you are more into the "live" thing, then come out to Momos every Wednesday in July at midnight for a taste of the goods. my trio is jazzaliscious, featuring Eldridge Goins on drums and John Thomasson on upright bass. a must see!

i'm planning a wonderfully fantastic CD release party at Cactus Cafe sometime in that area. i'm also planning on giving my website a makeover sometime in the next couple of months. yes, out with the old, in with the new as they say.

changes abound. for now, thanks for stopping by and listening!

tchau~
